Dear Santa...
The Boy is four and a half now. Each Christmas he becomes more and more aware of what's going on, and the anticipation becomes harder and harder for him. This is the first year he's asked to send a letter to Santa. The Boy, however, can not write. The Boy isn't actually that interested in writing, and I figure he'll come to it in his own good time, so I haven't been pushing it. This is the first time he's ever been concerned about his inability to write. So, because he's a bright kid, he came up with this idea:
Yes, this year's letter to Santa is a photo collage. I told him I'd post it to Santa, but I think I might just e-mail this scan instead, and cc it to some of Santa's little helpers. I believe that most of these were cut out from the Scholar's Choice catalogue, which is quite convenient, because Santa has been known to shop at Scholar's Choice, possibly because they do free gift wrapping as well.
Collage seems to be the new thing at our house. There are now four collages on my kitchen table to be sent to Santa. This one, I have been told, has the BEST stuff, because it was first.

The boy is so very clever!
I used to work in the school system helping kids with difficulty writing. One of the big problems they often have is people pushing them to write too soon. Kids cannot write until they can make a vertical line, horizontal line, triangle, circle and diamond. Until that happens just relax, you're doing the right thing :) They don't normally start writing until 5 or 6 anyway.
Hey Maggie, I'm not too worried about his inability to read or write. It was funny, although I tried not to laugh, to see his concern over how he would let Santa know what he wanted!
He's interested in books, loves being read to, loves "reading" by himself, and is just starting to recognize some of his letters when he sees them. Well, at least, he can recognize the letter A, since that's what his name starts with, so that's the important one! So I figure he'll get to it when he's ready. Probably sometime before he starts junior high!
I think the collage is awesome.
Way better than when parents write letters to Santa "for" their kids. Like, "Hi Santa, my name is so and so and I am 6 months old and I would like such and such..." Santa doesn't believe that for a second.
